It depends on your income. The lawyer sees you coming, and charges to the limit of your affordability. If you want to be smart, dress like a homeless person. The parasitic spouse gets to have the productive spouse pay for fees, under the lawyer rigged system.
Sheesh. I just read the answer above and have to shake my head at the idea of starting a legal relationship by trying to deceive your lawyer. That is silly.
The correct answer is that lawyers in domestic matters charge either by the hour or by the matter. That is, if you want to do a child custody change, they might charge, say, $5,000 for handling it. Or, they might charge $300 an hour.
Some lawyers charge more and some less. Some good lawyers may charge less than some not so good lawyers. But, the opposite is usually true.
Meet with a few and see what they might charge you and what you think of them.
